Neuchâtel Region – Watchmaking Urbanism, Belle Époque Atmosphere and Imagination
Watchmaking heritage defines La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, two towns in the Neuchâtel Mountains listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Their watchmaking urbanism tells the story of a unique expertise that has shaped both cities. Designed to support precision work by combining light and functionality, their architecture reflects a distinctive urban model closely linked to the rise of the watchmaking industry. This heritage can be explored at the Espace de l’urbanisme horloger and through guided urban tours. For watch enthusiasts, the Musée d’horlogerie du Locle | Château des Monts and the International Museum of Horology (closed for renovation until spring 2026) are must-see venues, alongside manufacture visits and watchmaking workshops offered by Watch Explorer, the watchmaking experiences programme of Neuchâtel Tourism.
In Neuchâtel, culture unfolds through a blend of historical elegance, golden stone architecture and creative energy. The city preserves remarkable traces of the “Belle Époque”, visible in its buildings, along the lakeside promenades and in its lifestyle. Immersive experiences — guided tours, treasure hunts and urban escape games — invite visitors to step back in time. At the same time, the lakeside city nurtures imagination with the “Tour du Fantastique”, a new museum space dedicated to fantastical worlds and creative expression, echoing the universe of Tolkien and the works of renowned illustrator John Howe.
Between UNESCO-listed watchmaking heritage, Belle Époque elegance and contemporary creation, the Neuchâtel Region offers a distinctive cultural richness, where the mastery of time meets that of history and imagination.
