The Métairies of the Neuchâtel Region: a living tradition at the top

For centuries, métairies have been an essential part of the landscape and culture of the Neuchâtel Jura. Originally, these were summer farms used during the warmer months to graze livestock in the high pastures. Over time, these agricultural buildings began to welcome passing visitors, offering rustic meals and basic accommodation to hikers, mountain workers, and nature lovers.

Today, these farmhouse-restaurants continue this tradition of simple, heartfelt hospitality in a stunning natural setting. Open mainly from spring to autumn, they invite guests to discover an authentic and generous cuisine, often made on-site using local ingredients. Signature dishes like crispy rösti, rich fondues, cheesy toasts, and homemade desserts bring back the flavours of the past, all in a warm and rustic atmosphere.

Nestled among open pastures and along scenic hiking trails, the métairies of the Neuchâtel Region are much more than just places to eat – they reflect a rural way of life deeply rooted in the region’s history. Whether you’re stopping for a break in nature, enjoying a meal on a terrace with views of the Jura ridges, or simply soaking in the peaceful moment, each visit offers a unique experience.
