Chasseral - An iconic summit of the Grand Chasseral region
Perched at an altitude of 1,606 metres, the summit of Chasseral offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in Switzerland. On clear days, the view stretches from the Alps — with iconic peaks such as the Eiger, the Mönch and Mont Blanc — to the gentler landscapes of the Swiss Plateau, the Three-Lakes region and, to the north, the Alsace plain and the Black Forest. This magnificent scenery is enhanced by the unspoiled natural environment that characterises the Grand Chasseral, where wooded pastures, forests and steep cliffs alternate harmoniously. Dominating the summit, the impressive telecommunications antenna serves as a landmark visible from afar and gives the site its distinctive silhouette, blending nature and human presence in perfect harmony.
Accessibility
Access to Chasseral is relatively easy and varies according to the season. By public transport, bus lines connect the summit with La Neuveville and Saint-Imier on weekends, offering a practical and environmentally friendly alternative to travelling by car. For motorists, a well-maintained road leads directly to the summit, where parking spaces are available nearby. In winter, however, the road is closed due to weather conditions, reinforcing the site’s wild and peaceful atmosphere.
Dining and accommodation
In terms of dining, the summit and its surroundings offer several opportunities to eat and relax. The Hotel Restaurant Chasseral welcomes visitors throughout the year (depending on conditions), serving traditional cuisine in a warm setting with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Nearby, the métairies — traditional farmhouse inns typical of the region — also invite visitors to discover local specialities such as cold platters, regional cheeses and the famous fondue. These gourmet stops are an integral part of the Chasseral experience, combining authenticity with conviviality.
Nature and preservation at Chasseral
The Chasseral massif is also home to protected natural areas of remarkable richness. Since 2001, the Chasseral Regional Nature Park has been working to preserve these unique landscapes, where remarkable flora and fauna coexist. Among them are emblematic species of the Grand Chasseral as well as sensitive habitats such as dry meadows and mountain forests. Visitors are encouraged to respect these natural reserves by staying on marked trails and adopting responsible behaviour, helping to preserve this exceptional environment for future generations.
Sustainable mobility
Finally, Chasseral is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Numerous hiking trails cross the region, including the famous Combe Grède, an impressive rocky cirque offering a route that is both demanding and spectacular. The Chasseral ridge, meanwhile, provides a more accessible yet equally panoramic walk, ideal for admiring the scenery stretching endlessly into the distance. Mountain biking enthusiasts are equally well catered for, with several marked trails winding through pastures
