The arboretum at the Reconvilier rest area is an exceptional compensation measure in the Swiss motorway network. It forms part of the forestry measures for the A16 Transjurane motorway.
Here you can admire 37 different trees and 62 different shrubs - almost all the species native to Switzerland. Each species is identified by a plaque giving its Latin scientific name and the common name of the species.
The central part of the rest area is dedicated to biodiversity. Marginal natural habitats that have become a blight on our landscape have been created here. Strips of tall flowering herbs, native bushes, sparse vegetation on stony ground, piles of stones, stumps and gullies share this area. Bird and insect boxes have also been installed with the support of regional nature conservation societies. All these habitats require only modest maintenance, but they are full of life. Let your eyes and ears pick out flowers, butterflies, lizards and birds!
Creating a mosaic of different habitats further enhances biodiversity. For example, a butterfly like the Shrew feeds on the flowers of grasslands and bushes, drinks from potholes and finds precious mineral salts on pebbles; adults lay eggs on tall grass, which the caterpillar feeds on; the caterpillar hides on an old stump or between two stones so that the chrysalis is protected when it metamorphoses into an adult.
- The arboretum is also accessible on foot. There is a signposted route from Reconvilier station and another from the Birs footpath between Tavannes and Reconvilier.
- Bicycles, skateboards and other soft means of locomotion are not permitted at the rest area due to the presence of motorway traffic.
- Picnic tables and children's play equipment are available.
