In 1476, the Confederates won a brilliant victory over Charles the Bold in Murten. According to legend, a harbinger ran from Murten to Fribourg with the branch of a limetree in his hand to announce the Swiss victory. That event is commemorated every autumn with a race that attracts thousands of runners from all around the world.
