Located on the outskirts of Avenches, near Lake Morat, the Swiss National Stud Farm, or Haras National Suisse (HNS), is a centre of excellence of the Confederation for Horse Breeding. The HNS is open to the public for guided tours, carriage rides and regular events.
Founded in Avenches in 1899, the Haras National Suisse (HNS) then had an area of 150 hectares. In 1997, it sold part of its land to the new Institut Equestre National d’Avenches (IENA). The HNS has a threefold mission: training (for veterinarians, agronomists, equestrians, farriers and so on), equestrian research and the promotion and support of the Franches-Montagnes breed, the only typically Swiss horse.
