A tour of discovery of the Bauhaus style in Biel.
Why is modernity so important in the architecture of Biel? In 1919, Walter Gropius founded "Bauhaus" in Weimar and this saw the start of modernity. Bauhaus has exerted an influence upon architecture, design, art and fashion. In 1921, the Social Democrat Guido Müller became the mayor of Biel and decisively promoted the “modern movement” along with his team. In 1923, the railway station was moved to the current location, and Biel thereby obtained 90'000 m² of building land on an ideal site. The result was an entire district built in the new Bauhaus style, and this makes Biel unique.
