Housed in the historic Castle of Yverdon-les-Bains, the Museum of Yverdon and Region is one of the oldest in the canton of Vaud. It retraces 8,000 years of history and also acts as an information centre for palafitic sites of ancient houses built on stilts, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Museum of Yverdon and Region is one of the oldest museums in the canton of Vaud, dating back to the second-half of the 18th century. Its permanent exhibition, in which the castle plays an integral role, presents the history of Yverdon-les-Bains and region over a time span of almost 8,000 years.
Significant artefacts of regional archaeology are displayed in its many rooms and provide a visual timeline of the Neolithic, Celtic, Gallo-Roman and Burgundian periods. The two particularly well-preserved Gallo-Roman ships, the Bernese paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the 18th-century celestial globe are the most noteworthy exhibits in the collection. Visitors can also view Egyptian antiquities such as the Nes-Shu mummy and its funeral trousseau.
The museum shares this rich heritage with the general public by means of temporary exhibitions, publications and educational activities.
