La Neuveville is a very interesting medieval town rich in history, situated on the shores of Lake Bienne. Its remarkable architecture testifies to its reputable past.
To wander through the narrow paved streets of the old town is a real pleasure. Here you will find multi-coloured houses complete with a thousand and one details waiting to catch your eye: a metal dragon on top of a roof, the coat of arms of the region on the huge oak door of the Tour de Rive, an open stream flowing along the main street and even clusters of grapes painted on a building’s façade, reminding us of the importance of vines for this medieval town. Flower shops, restaurants and tiny shops bring this dream-like scene to life.
Along with the bilingual hamlet of Schafis / Chavannes, La Neuveville is home to a dozen vignerons who will gladly open their cellars for a tasting or an aperitif if requested.
A lively town
La Neuveville offers a wide range of activities throughout all four seasons. In summer the town’s streets are transformed into a stage for concerts. A market with about fifty stands is held several times a year on the promenade bordering the lake. Here’s a chance to unearth a real treasure in a unique setting! Not to mention a whole lot of other possibilities - an Art Gallery and history museum combined, guided tours of the old town, some of them lantern-lit in the evening, the Boogie Woogie Festival, the Wine Festival, the “Course des Pavés”, a series of races through the town’s streets, and, of course, no end of things to do on the lake.
The town also forms part of the Parc régional Chasseral and is officially classed as one of Switzerland’s most beautiful villages.
The mystery of the witches
A witch hunt, the use of medicinal herbs, mysterious fires... La Neuveville abounds with tales of sorcery. A guided tour enables the visitor to learn more about these legends.
