This is the oldest building of its kind in the Bernese Jura. Dating from 1535, it belongs to a type of farmhouse with a covered area, open on one side, connecting the house and outbuildings (“devant-huis” type building) and is listed as a historic monument of national importance.

"Coming from Moutier in a horse-drawn wagon, we stopped in Grandval at the “Banneret Wisard” farmhouse, built during the tumultuous Reformation years, which has never had running water or electricity. We were surprised to see no chimney on its pyramid-shaped shingled roof. It’s worth visiting the house to discover just how the kitchen smoke is channelled up and out. In the barn, we tried the meats and sausages hanging from the arched smokehouse ceiling, relishing the taste of days gone by. Whether you sample pizza, pies or bread, or go round the flea market, you’re given a warm welcome. The house is run by volunteers keen to revive the old traditions, and the activities on offer make this restored farmhouse an exemplary living museum."
