Take the shady path that borders the lake to visit both charming small towns.

Avenches, the capital of Roman Helvetia, founded in the 1st century CE, had 20,000 inhabitants at its peak. The town was also an episcopal seat until Bishop Marius’ seat was moved to Lausanne. The walk begins in the middle of the anciens remains, at the site of the Roman theatre, now partly restored. Head towards the Le Cigognier shrine, recognisable by its upright white column, and then climb up to the amphitheatre. Next, walk down towards the railway station and continue alongside the rails towards the Landi Tower. Cross the railway tracks at the first junction, walk over the bridge that straddles the motorway and take the path to your right.

The route continues towards Lake Murten. Once you reach Avenches beach, walk along it towards Faoug/Murten. Pass the village of Faoug, whose name comes from an old word for beech, and continue as far as Murten. As you enter Meyriez, you can see an obelisk built by the canton of Fribourg following the destruction of the ossuary that contained the remains of soldiers killed during the Battle of Murten. This was an important point in the history of Switzerland, which was recognised as a great military power thanks to its two victories (Grandson and Murten). The path ends by walking up to the town of Murten, many of whose historic monuments have been preserved; take the opportunity to climb onto the city wall, including the circular walk, which is accessible all year round.

Tip: make the most of one of the three beaches along the way for a refreshing swim in Lake Murten.
