The tour goes from the Esplanade towards the Schüssinsel Park and the iconic new buildings of Biel/Bienne’s Swatch and Omega watch brands, to the Terrain Gurzelen, the former football stadium, which temporarily provides space for alternative projects. On this tour full of contrasts, you obtain an insight into urban life, the economy, and city and nature coming together in Biel/Bienne.
It begins at the Esplanade, a square between Biel/Bienne Congress House and the independent Chessu youth centre, with its graffiti-covered cupola, which has been a symbol of autonomy and self-determination since the 1970s. It continues past the freight station into the Gurzelen district in the heart of the city of Biel/Bienne, an area that has been successfully regenerated in recent years. The new building for Biel/Bienne’s Swatch and Omega watch brands, designed by the famous architect Shigeru Ban, is particularly striking. Learn about the history of two major companies in the Swiss watch industry and their new headquarters, which snake across Schüssinsel Park. Afterwards, take a look at the Terrain Gurzelen, a unique, alternative site that assists the development of innovative and sustainable projects. This tour will show you the incredible contrasts that are present in Switzerland’s largest bilingual city.
